The Purpose of Social Studies in Alberta
The Alberta Social Studies curriculum focuses on shaping students into active, engaged, critically and creatively thinking citizens. Students will actively participate in identity building activities that emphasize material from multiple perspectives that contributes to the attitudes, knowledge, and skills of each student. As well students will be exposed to current societal issues. By the end of the high school curriculum they should be able to understand and contribute to the liberal society in which they live.
LIBERALISM: AN OVERARCHING CONCEPT
Work Ethic: The Key to SuccessMost educational research demonstrates that strong work ethic and 'grit' (determination/perseverance) are more reliable indicators of success in education than IQ/intelligence. Therefore, it is important for students to know that as a general rule it is the work you put into mastering knowledge or skills that has the most profound impact on your achievement. Thus, it is important for you to focus on your work ethic and habits including engaging and completing tasks, reading/exploring topics, and preparing for and learning from evaluations.
